Description

For biological and medical applications, fluorescence microscopes are used to observe certain parts of living cells and tissues with the help of fluorochromes. One or more fluorochromes (fluorophores) are added to the parts of the sample to be observed. When the fluorochromes are exposed to so-called excitation light, the excitation energy is absorbed by the fluorochrome which will begin to emit so-called emission light that can be observed by the microscope. Tumor cells can be distinguished from other cells, biological processes can be followed, the presence or absence of antibodies can be tested, etc.
